Year 1 - Puffin Class

The Year 1 class is led by Ms Lodhi. The Teaching Assistant in the class is Ms Ndoko.

We will practice phonics, reading and spelling in our Read, Write Inc. lessons and will write in a variety of genres in our Literacy lessons. We will focus on some lovely stories including; Katie in London and Paddington Bear.

In Maths, we will be practicing counting and writing numbers, making number bonds and number patterns and adding and subtracting.

In History, we will look at how toys have changed over time and will be thinking about what your favourite toy is and why. In Geography, we will be learning more about our local area and thinking about the physical and human features of where we live. We will be looking and learning about humans in science, drawing self portraits in art and thinking about pulse and tempo in music.

Our PE and Performing Arts lessons will be on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please make sure you have your PE kit in school on these days and remember to write your name in all the items. 

Spring Update

Puffin Class as always have been extremely busy this half term. They have carried some interesting experiments within Science such as seeing which material is waterproof, creating a house for the 3 little pigs so the big bad wolf can’t blow it down! Along with Science, the children have been learning interesting facts about their school and this was followed up with going on a treasure hunt around the whole school! This was super fun and exciting! Puf n class have read some fabulous books such as ‘Can I join your club?’, ‘Mister Seahorse’, ‘Peace at last’, ‘The Smeds and the Smoos’ and ‘The Tunnel’. The children are amazing at using adjectives to help describe a character or setting.

Within Maths, the children have been using their dienes to help add 2-digit numbers with a 2-digit numbers. In History, Puffin class have had fun learning about growing up. They have looked at events that have happened in the past with them and what the future could look like such as learning how to drive when they grow up.

Spring 2

Puffin class have had a fun and busy term lled with themed days and exciting learning. In Maths, we have learnt about money and the value of each coin along with adding money together, nding out what halves and quarters are of a number along with adding and subtracting using the column method! In English, we have had a chance to read some exciting stories such as; ‘Can I join your club’; ‘The Tunnel’; ‘The Smeds and the Smoos’ and ‘The Wind Blew’. In History, the class have learnt all about what a family tree is and nding out what the Queen’s family tree looks like. In Geography and Science has been all about the weather. We watched some interesting videos about extreme weather conditions.

Along with learning about weather, Freshwater theatre company visiting HATO and the children were involved in some fun drama activities about the different types of weather. Science afternoon was lled with lots of exciting activities which looked at the best clothes to wear in different weather conditions. World Book Day was also an exciting day which involved the children dressing up as their favourite book character and showing off their costumes in the primary hall.
