Modern Foreign Languages

At Harris Academy Tottenham students in KS3 have 2 to 3 Spanish lessons of 50 minutes per week and students in KS4 have 4 Spanish or French lessons of 50 minutes per week.

The way we teach languages is by its nature very accessible. Lessons are taught in the Target Language to ensure full language immersion and are supported by lots of visual aids.

Our students also take part in a number of competitions, events and clubs throughout the year to showcase and celebrate their achievements in languages.

Key Stage 3 Spanish

In Year 7, Students will study the following topics:

Autumn 1

Mi Vida

 

Students will learn about Spanish culture. They will practise introductions, greetings and the basics of Spanish pronunciation.

They will practise numbers, dates birthdays and the alphabet. Students will also give details about others using verb conjugations.

Autumn 2

Mi Tiempo Libre

Students will describe what they like to do and give opinions. They will also describe the weather and activities they do on different weather days.

Spring 1

Mi Insti

Students will talk about school subjects using conjugated verbs and give a range of opinions. Students will describe their school and use conjugated verbs to talk about what they do at break time.

Spring 2

Mi Familia y Mis Amigos

 

Students will continue the topic of School and practise listening skills to understand more details about schools and opinions. They will also practise writing a longer text about their school.

Students will begin the topic of Family and Friends and describe family members, hair and eye colour using verbs ‘ser’ and ‘tener’.

Summer 1

Mi Familia y Mis Amigos

Students will continue this module and describe what other people are like using verbs in the third person. They will also describe where they live and develop reading skills through reading about a carnival in Cadiz.

Summer 2

Cultura

Students will work on a cultural project about Latin American countries and they will work on a short film project related to the Spanish- speaking world.

Students will be assessed on listening, speaking, reading, writing. They will practise translation and develop their grammatical skills.

In Year 8, students will study the following topics:

Autumn 1

Mis Vacaciones

Students will describe a holiday in the past using a range of conjugated verbs. Students will learn more about the Spanish festival Los Sanfermines.

Autumn 2

Todo Sobre Mi Vida

Students will talk about technology, music and television. They will give opinions and use the comparative. They will also use the past tense to  describe what they did yesterday and give opinions in the past.

Spring 1

A Comer

 Students will talk about what food they like and give opinions. They will describe mealtimes and use negative structures. Students will practice using formal forms of address (usted and ustedes) to practise ordering in a restaurant.

 

Spring 2

¿Qué hacemos?

Students will practice making plans to go to different places and learn how to accept and decline invitations.

Students will practise using reflexive verbs to describe daily routines.

Summer 1

¿Qué hacemos?

Students will continue the module and talk about clothes they like to wear using colour adjective agreements and give opinions.

In this module they will also use three tenses to describe sporting events.

Summer 2

Cultura

Students will learn more about Latin American culture. They will practise their listening skills and use a range of tenses to describe a world trip.

Students will be assessed on listening, speaking, reading, writing. They will practise translation and develop their grammatical skills.

Key Stage 3 Mandarin

Students will describe holiday accommodation and practise dealing with problems. They will practise using verbs with usted. Students will also give an account of a holiday in the past and use three tenses together.

Spring 1

Students will give opinions about school subjects and describe school uniform. They will make comparisons between schools then and now, they will talk about school rules and problems.

Spring 2

Students will discuss school clubs using different tenses and talk about school and club achievements they have made.

Summer 1

Students will talk about socialising and family. They will also talk about social networks and making plans. They will ask and answer questions about their plans using present, past and future tenses.

Students will discuss reading preferences and discuss more about friends and family using a range of relationship verbs and making reference to the present and past tenses.

Students will be assessed on listening, speaking, reading, writing. They will practise translation and develop their grammatical skills.

Students will use a range of tenses to discuss free time activities, television programmes, films, and what they usually do. Students will also talk about sports and use the imperfect tense to say what they used to do.

Students will discuss different types of entertainment and develop opinions. They will also discuss who inspires them using a range of tenses.

Spring 1

Ciudades

 Students will discuss places in town, shops, features of a region and they will be expected to ask and respond to questions about their area. Students will also use the future tense to make plans.

 

Spring 2

Ciudades

Students will explain preferences and use demonstrative adjectives to practise shopping for clothes and presents. Students will discuss problems in town and use synonyms and antonyms. They will  describe a visit in the past and use three tenses together. They will also use idioms.

Summer 1

De Costumbre

Students will describe daily routine, talk about illnesses and injuries, typical foods and different festivals. They will also describe a special day and use reflexive verbs in the preterite tense.

Summer 2

Mi Gente

Students will discuss a music festival and learn how to add interest when narrating a story. Students will develop speaking skills further through role plays, picture prompts and general conversation.

Jours ordinaires, jours de fête

Students will describe family celebrations, customs, traditions and festivals in French-speaking countries/communities. Students will use a combination of tenses and verbs of opinions to give their point of view.

Students will be assessed on listening, speaking, reading, writing. They will practise translation and develop their grammatical skills.
