At Harris Academy Tottenham, Latin is studied by all students at Key Stage 3 and as a GCSE option in Year 10.

At Key Stage 3, Latin language is introduced through various texts about Roman daily life. During the course, the pupils develop their vocabulary competence in Latin and make links to English and other modern European languages while exploring the daily life of Caecilius’ family in Pompeii. The lessons are planned and delivered using the Cambridge Latin Course, books 1-2 and the additional resources that are provided at Cambridge Latin Course website.

In Year 10, Latin is taught as a GCSE option. A more targeted syllabus is taught, following the WJEC Eduqas specification. Pupils’ ability to translate Latin text is mastered, which enables them to gain a further understanding of the Roman world through reading and responding to its language and literature.

Mission statement

Through studying languages, we promote pupils’ curiosity and understanding of different countries’ people, culture, history, literature and arts. We challenge pupils to consider their own identity and place in the world and to appreciate and empathise with different ways of seeing the world.  We celebrate and harness the experience and cultural identity that many of our pupils bring to the language classroom at the Academy in Tottenham.
