Harris Academy Tottenham is committed to fair practice, enacting the requirements for examinations with integrity. Copies of all our examinations policies can be downloaded below.

Community languages

At Harris Academy Tottenham, we celebrate the talents of our students in many ways; whether in assemblies, through highlighting their sporting achievements or issuing positive points for the kind acts that we see from them every day.

We are delighted that many of our pupils have an additional talent in being able to speak and/or read a language other than English.

In recognition of this valuable ability, which will stand them in excellent stead in the global community in the future, we offer an opportunity to achieve a formal qualification in that language.

During the Summer GCSE examination cycle and subject to passing a mock examination, your child will be able to sit a ‘Community Languages’ GCSE, which will include several examined components. This community language is a GCSE in the language you speak or read at home. This will mean that they can achieve an additional full GCSE. This GCSE is highly respected by 6th form schools and colleges, as well as by universities and seen as the same as any other GCSE. It will also mean their skills in translation and interpreting are formally recognised by any future employer, which will make their candidacy even more desirable.

Candidates are required to be tutored privately in their chosen community language in order to prepare for the demands of the examination process; we will not provide preparatory lessons within school. In addition, where we cannot provide a member of staff who speaks the language, it is the candidate’s responsibility to organise an oral examiner if necessary. The examiner will need to arrange a suitable date and time with the Exams Officer to conduct the oral exam.

Candidate will typically take Community Language GCSEs at the end of Year 11.
