At Harris Academy Tottenham, our approaches to Literacy are focused around reading, extended writing and oracy. Within these areas, students develop their abilities to be excellent communicators and become equipped with the academic register they need to be able to access a broad range of opportunities. Our literacy programmes encourage reading for pleasure; as a means of developing students social, moral, spiritual and cultural needs.
This half term we have had pen down day to develop and enrich students vocabulary and awareness of register. Across the Academy, we have extended writing competitions in which students have the opportunity to win prizes, merits and enter a draw in win vouchers. To celebrate our students writing successes, our extended writing 'stars of the week' have their written work showcased around the Academy.
Across the Academy, Students take part in our DEAR programme. Every day Students Drop Everything And Read. These sessions include guided and independent reading, with a rich focus on comprehension and developing inference skills.
Around the Academy, students can find extensive recommended reading lists for all key stages and book reviews in all English classrooms to inspire all readers! Our Year 9 Brilliant Club students are currently taking part in a '20 reading book challenge' in which they will be completing presentations and running book clubs.
