16-19 Tuition Fund

The purpose of this statement is to set out how Harris Academy Tottenham Sixth Form will use its 16 to 19 tuition fund allocation to support students who have been academically disadvantaged due to coronavirus (COVID-19).

The 16 to 19 tuition fund is ring-fenced funding for schools, colleges and other 16 to 19 providers, made available to help them mitigate the disruption to learning arising from coronavirus (COVID-19), especially for pupils from economically deprived backgrounds (defined as students from the 27% most economically deprived areas of the country based on the Index of Multiple Deprivation) and specifically for those who have not yet achieved a grade 5 or above in English or Maths, but are enrolled on a level 3 course.

Specifically, it will be used to support small group tuition for students in Sciences, Social Sciences, CTEC Sport, Humanities, Computing and other courses where learning has been disrupted, as well as to support students whose learning in English and Mathematics at GCSE may have been affected; this will be in order to ensure they are ready for the demands of their Level 3 qualifications.

How will Harris Academy Tottenham Sixth Form use the 16 to 19 tuition fund?

The Sixth Form is committed to ensuring the tuition fund is used in accordance with the government’s guidance on the 16 to 19 tuition fund by providing small group tuition for students aged 16 to 19 who have not yet achieved a grade 5 or above in English and/or Maths. The provision will not be limited to tuition for English and Maths but will also be used to help progressing students on vocational courses where assessment may have been deferred because of lockdown. Students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) will also be supported by this provision. Tuition groups will comprise of no more than five students and the tuition sessions will be scheduled in addition to the planned programme of study hours already timetabled for the academic year 2022/23. Tuition and additional support may be delivered using a blend of online and in-person delivery and aims to improve levels of progress and achievement.

Examples of some of the small group tuition support on offer will include:

  • GCSE English and Mathematics intervention to ensure readiness and success of Level 3 qualifications
  • BTEC/CTEC assessment preparation
  • Vocational coursework “catch-up” sessions
  • Subject-specific exam preparation
  • General exam skills

Tuition support offered will be based on an individual needs assessment as identified through an appropriate diagnostic assessment. The funds will primarily be used to appoint appropriately qualified staff to run the groups alongside existing staff who will be remunerated for providing “catch up” sessions beyond the hours of the existing timetable.
